Chapter Four: Josh

Pacing back and forth in my office at my investment firm, I interlock my fingers and place my hands over the back of my head. Exhaling with frustration, thoughts rush through my mind.

What is she doing? Can’t Tasha see through her ex’s bullshit? Besides the picture on Tasha’s phone that she showed me of her ex, I’ve never even met the guy but I can smell his infidelity from here. Fuck! What can I do? How can I get her to see the truth?

I plop down in my chair and prop my elbows on the desk. Flashes of my ex-fiancée cheating on me, spiral around in my mind.

I was in love once with a person who cheated on me and I wanted another chance. Am I being too judgmental toward Tasha’s decisions? If Tasha really was in love with that douchebag at some point, can I blame her for wanting to try to make it work with him?

The heat in my office is consuming me and I feel like I can hardly breathe. I glance at the time and it’s seven at night. I’ve got to get out of here and get some fresh air to clear my mind.

Grabbing my wallet and keys, I get in my two-door sports car and drive to a local pub.

“Hey there, Josh,” the bartender greets me. “The usual?”

“Not today,” I answer as I take my seat on the stool at the end of the bar. “I need something stronger. Make it a double whiskey coke.”

“A double? Whoa, you never order a double. Something must be terribly wrong. You wanna talk about it?”

My thoughts are so scrambled at the moment, I’m not sure I could talk about it even if I wanted to.

“Thanks, but not right now. I just need time to clear my thoughts.”

“You got it, boss. One double whiskey coke, coming up.”

The bartender turns around, mixes my drink, and slides it to me. I bring the drink to my lips and am just about to sip when something on the other side of the bar catches my eye. A woman sits on top of a man making out with him, neither of them having any shame or sense of awareness of the environment around them. The man has his hand up the middle of the woman’s short dress, fingering her for everyone to see.

I’m all for having a good time but this is a public place and I’m just trying to have a drink in peace.

Getting up, I march over to the couple and tap the man on the shoulder. “Hey buddy, come on. Can you dip your fingers in the sauce somewhere else?” I snap.

The woman’s lips pop when she detaches them from the man’s neck and looks up at me. She slides off his lap and the man stands up to look me in the eyes.

His smug face is familiar.

It’s you. Tasha’s douchebag ex. I recognize you from the picture.

“You got a problem with me, dude?” the man puffs up his chest.
